The visual artists Josefina Guilisasti and Alvaro Oyarzún exhibit “Construcción de dos miradas” (Construction of Two Gazes) at the AFA Gallery. This show synthesizes the work they have been developing for a while. Both, albeit working separately have elaborated works that converge on the reflection about tradition in painting from a contemporary art standpoint. Not a minor question if we consider this tradition as one of the core issues of the representation theory, the notion of image and the figure of the artist. These are the concepts developed by Guilisasti and Oyarzún in their work. The path we will traverse through their “two gazes” starts with the analysis of their works in an autonomous manner, and, then, they entwine their proposals in a similar area; the previous, with the objective of making their encounters and confrontations that arise from the desire – shared – to construe a work that, from art, dialogues with itself.

As many of us know, the genre of the still life dates back to antiquity, and is characterized by the representation of one or more objects belonging to the world of domestic life. Historically, the academy has tended to regard the still life as a minor genre, because of this connection to domesticity; after all, still life subjects usually come from the kitchen.

For this reason the genre was often relegated to secondary spaces, scarcely ever displayed in the great private salons. Some even felt that the genre was so lacking in greatness that the ability and talent of a good copyist were enough to satisfy its requirements.

Josefina Guilisasti’s work is defined within the category of a still life. A pictorial genre that excludes narrative and megalomaniac representation, addressing objects and situations that do not possess any type of visual protagonism; limiting itself specifically to the questions of seeing and looking in a certain historical - cultural context.

The artist recaptures this direction applying it in structural terms for the development of her work. She studies and selects certain appliances that are arranged in domestic and everyday spaces, so as to later represent them through painting. (Domestic utensils, furniture, porcelain birds) are some of the elements she has gathered for her investigation, analyzing the possibilities they offer to the eye in order to monopolize them in one single glimpse and the space where they were displayed. Such observations result in numerous series of paintings that are installed in specific constructions, emulating their initial state as “real” objects, and giving birth to an ambiguous condition of objects and imaginary spaces that relate to the spectator. The latter linkage becomes crucial in the work of the artist. The contemporary spectator, absorbed by a series of images and sensations that saturate his/her visual field, is led to a perceptual context that has the particularity of granting the conditions to concentrate his/her glaze towards elements that are not regularly perceived in everyday environments.

El duelo” (The Duel) –title of the work “Construcción de dos miradas(Construction of Two Gazes) – we see an evolution in her visual research. She displayed in the gallery six large pieces of furniture that being in line divided the gallery in two, thus forming two paths. From the front we see our ledges crammed with boxes with pictures in them, these pictures represent daily objects, that, different from those used in her previous works link their functionality to their decorative quality: cups, tea kettles and plates have a floral motive inscribed in one of their faces (Figure 3). Behind, the furniture can be looked over while seeing the back of each box and the pillars that support the furniture, which are geometrical like the boxes.traducida

This task focused on painting 33 porcelain birds that embraced a work of 125 oil paintings on canvas, mounted on 16 wood models of equal dimension but with different divisions. These 33 pieces were selected according to their condition as objects that decorate domestic interiors, based on their brightness, their own materialness and craft, since they are copies of a copy. They are cultural objects that, painted from different view points, the way in which the observer relates to them is multiplied seeking the reconstruction of its pieces to solve the jigsaw, meaning never to be able to see all of its faces simultaneously.
